Prime Minister Narendra Modi and U.S. President Donald Trump renewed their well-known personal chemistry during a bilateral meeting on the sidelines of the G7 Summit in France. The interaction marked their first face-to-face meeting in nearly 16 months and signalled efforts to keep India-U.S. ties on track despite recent differences over trade and regional issues.
The two leaders exchanged a warm greeting and held detailed discussions during the summit in Évian-les-Bains. Trump later described the meeting as “good” and praised Modi as a “tough negotiator”, while expressing his intention to visit India in the future.
The Trump Modi meeting attracted attention because the leaders have shared a strong personal rapport over the years, often highlighted through public appearances and high-profile events in both countries.
Trade and Economic Ties on Agenda
Trade emerged as one of the key subjects during the discussions. India and the United States have been working to address tariff-related concerns and expand economic cooperation.
Officials from both sides have also explored opportunities in supply chains, technology partnerships, artificial intelligence and investment. Although no major agreement was announced, the talks were seen as an effort to maintain momentum in the strategic partnership.
Maritime Security Takes Centre Stage
Prime Minister Modi also raised concerns over maritime security and the safety of Indian seafarers working in the Gulf region. The issue gained urgency after the recent deaths of Indian sailors and growing tensions around key shipping routes.

Modi emphasised the importance of keeping global maritime corridors open and secure. Trump expressed condolences and reaffirmed Washington’s commitment to working closely with India on regional security matters.
Strategic Partnership Remains Important
The meeting came at a time when both countries are navigating complex geopolitical challenges. India continues to deepen ties with the United States while maintaining its strategic autonomy on issues such as energy security and regional diplomacy.
Analysts say the positive optics of the interaction indicate that both leaders remain committed to preserving the broader relationship despite occasional policy disagreements.
The Trump Modi meeting also underlined India’s growing role in global forums. As a regular invitee to the G7 Summit, India has increasingly positioned itself as a voice of the Global South and an important partner in discussions on trade, technology and international security.
