Community Backing Becomes Critical as Small Businesses Face Mounting Pressures

As economic pressures intensify for small and local businesses around the world, community support is increasingly recognised as a vital factor in helping enterprises stay afloat and grow. Recent data and initiatives show how local engagement, loyalty, and collective action are playing a major role in sustaining businesses facing financial and competitive challenges.

Small Business Struggles Persist

New research shows that a significant number of small businesses are under strain from rising operating costs, lower profits, and ongoing economic uncertainty. According to the 2025 Small Business Perspectives Report by the Council of Small Business Organizations Australia (COSBOA) and Commonwealth Bank, 64% of small businesses reported lower profits compared to the previous year, and 60% said they often had to dip into personal savings just to keep their operations running. Moreover, 72% identified high business costs as the biggest obstacle to growth, while many also reported burnout and stress among owners.

Community Support Boosts Business Confidence and Growth Prospects

At the same time, surveys show that strong community connections are tangibly linked to business optimism and future growth. A recent UK survey revealed that around 89% of SMEs feel confident about growing their business, with deep community ties cited as a key driver. Among businesses confident in their prospects, 75% credited local community support as contributing significantly to their success, while 82% expect to hire more local workers in the coming year.

Furthermore, a report from the National Federation of Independent Business (NFIB) highlights that many small business owners are not only serving their communities but also giving back — 90% reported making financial contributions to local organisations in the past year, and 76% volunteered their time for civic or community activities.

Why Local Support Matters

Experts say community support helps businesses in several ways:

  • Customer loyalty: A nationwide poll found that 85% of adults are more likely to buy from businesses that actively engage with their community, and 80% of owners say local support has a significant impact on their success.
  • Economic resilience: Communities with strong small business networks tend to experience better survival rates and faster recovery after downturns, with research showing up to 11% higher small business survival rates where support ecosystems are robust.
  • Collaboration and innovation: Local partnerships and shared initiatives — from crowdfunding campaigns to business coalitions — help businesses pool resources, share customer bases, and withstand competitive pressures.

Community Initiatives in Action

Recent initiatives underscore this trend. For example, the 2026 Community Crowdfund program in Midland is actively supporting local small businesses by offering grant funding — including a matched $60,000 target for selected applicants — based on community-focused proposals and pitches.

What This Means for the Future

While economic challenges remain significant, the data clearly shows that strong community engagement, local loyalty, and shared support networks are more than just goodwill — they are key to business sustainability. As small business owners continue to adapt, communities that rally around local enterprises are helping preserve jobs, enhance economic resilience, and foster long-term local prosperity.
