Senior Congress leader Sonia Gandhi and Trinamool Congress chief Mamata Banerjee joined a crucial INDIA bloc meeting in New Delhi on Monday, as opposition parties attempted to project unity despite growing differences within the alliance.
The gathering brought together leaders from more than 20 opposition parties and marked one of the bloc’s most significant meetings in recent months. The discussions come at a time when several alliance partners are dealing with political setbacks and internal disagreements.
A notable moment before the meeting was a warm greeting between Sonia Gandhi and Mamata Banerjee, a gesture seen by many as a message of opposition unity despite political differences between their parties in West Bengal.
Opposition Focuses on Common Strategy
Leaders attending the meeting discussed ways to strengthen coordination against the BJP and address challenges facing the alliance. The agenda reportedly included electoral strategy, economic issues and efforts to maintain cohesion among member parties.
The INDIA bloc meeting also comes after recent assembly election setbacks for some opposition parties. These results have increased pressure on alliance leaders to present a united front ahead of future political battles.
Several prominent leaders, including Rahul Gandhi and Akhilesh Yadav, attended the discussions. However, the absence of some key allies highlighted continuing challenges within the coalition.

BJP Dismisses Opposition Gathering
The BJP criticized the meeting and described it as a “cosmetic” exercise aimed at hiding divisions within the opposition camp.
Ruling party leaders argued that disagreements among alliance partners have weakened the bloc’s ability to present a coherent alternative. Opposition leaders, however, maintained that cooperation among parties remains essential to challenge the BJP at the national level.
Alliance Faces Key Test
Political observers say the meeting will be an important test of the alliance’s ability to manage internal differences while pursuing a common political agenda.
The INDIA bloc meeting was expected to focus not only on electoral strategy but also on rebuilding confidence among partners after recent tensions. Whether the alliance can translate that unity into coordinated political action remains one of the key questions ahead of upcoming elections.
