‘Partners, Not Rivals’: Wang Yi Signals Fresh Push to Improve India-China Ties

Wang Yi,

Chinese Foreign Minister Wang Yi has called on India and China to view each other as “partners, not rivals” and an “opportunity instead of a threat”. His remarks come at a time when both countries are showing signs of rebuilding diplomatic engagement after years of strained relations.

Wang made the comments while stressing the need for mutual trust and cooperation between Asia’s two largest nations. He said both sides should follow the direction set by their leaders and work towards common goals instead of allowing differences to dominate the relationship.

Diplomatic engagement gathers pace

The India China ties have shown gradual improvement over the past several months. Senior officials from both countries recently met in New Delhi on the sidelines of the BRICS National Security Advisers’ meeting and noted progress towards normalising bilateral relations.

The discussions focused on strengthening communication and promoting stability after a difficult period in relations. The two countries have also engaged on regional security issues and broader cooperation within the BRICS framework.

Border issues still remain

Despite the warmer tone, differences remain on several issues, particularly along the Line of Actual Control (LAC). Relations between New Delhi and Beijing came under severe strain following the military standoff in eastern Ladakh in 2020.

However, both sides have increasingly signalled their willingness to maintain dialogue and avoid further escalation. Analysts believe sustained engagement and confidence-building measures will be crucial to ensuring long-term stability.

The India China ties remain one of the most important relationships in Asia because of the countries’ economic size and regional influence. Wang’s remarks are being seen as another indication that both sides are willing to keep communication channels open and explore areas of cooperation even as sensitive issues continue to require careful handling.
