CNG Prices Hiked by ₹2/kg in Mumbai, PNG Rates Also Increased

Mumbai CNG

Commuters and households in Mumbai will now pay more for fuel and cooking gas after Mahanagar Gas Limited (MGL) increased CNG and PNG prices across the Mumbai Metropolitan Region. The revised rates came into effect from May 30.

Under the latest revision, CNG prices have increased by ₹2 per kg, taking the retail rate to ₹86 per kg. Domestic piped natural gas (PNG) prices have also increased by 50 paise per standard cubic metre, raising the rate to ₹52 per unit.

Why MGL Increased Gas Prices

MGL said rising gas procurement costs forced the company to revise prices. Reduced domestic gas allocation and higher dependence on expensive gas sources have increased overall input costs. The depreciation of the Indian rupee has also added pressure on procurement expenses.

This is the second CNG price increase in Mumbai within 15 days. MGL had earlier raised CNG rates by ₹2 per kg during the middle of May.

Impact on Auto and Taxi Operators

The latest increase is expected to affect nearly 12 lakh CNG-powered vehicles across the Mumbai Metropolitan Region. Auto-rickshaw and taxi unions have renewed demands for a fare revision following the fuel price hike.

Transport operators say repeated increases in fuel costs are raising operating expenses and reducing earnings. Several unions have urged authorities to review fare structures.

Global Energy Concerns Behind Hike

Industry experts link the latest increase to pressure in global energy markets. Supply disruptions and tensions in West Asia have pushed up energy costs, affecting imported gas prices.

Despite the increase, MGL maintains that CNG remains cheaper than petrol and diesel for daily transportation needs.
