A Manipur earthquake measuring 5.2 magnitude struck the state early Tuesday morning. The tremor was felt across several parts of Northeast India.
According to the National Centre for Seismology, the earthquake occurred at 5:59 am. The epicentre was located in Kamjong District.
Officials said the quake originated at a depth of around 62 kilometres. As a result, residents in several areas felt moderate shaking.
Tremors Felt Across the Northeast
The tremors were not limited to Manipur. People in Nagaland, Assam and Meghalaya also reported shaking.
Many residents moved outdoors as a precaution. Meanwhile, local authorities began monitoring the situation.
Reports also suggested that mild tremors were felt near the India-Myanmar border region.
No Major Damage Reported
So far, officials have not reported any casualties or major property damage.
Emergency teams remain on alert. At the same time, local administrations continue to assess the impact of the earthquake.
Authorities have advised residents to remain cautious and follow official safety instructions if aftershocks occur.
Why Earthquakes Are Common in Manipur
Manipur lies in one of India’s most active seismic zones. The region experiences frequent tectonic movement because it is located near the India-Myanmar plate boundary.
As a result, earthquakes occur regularly across the Northeast. In recent weeks, the region has recorded several smaller tremors.
The latest Manipur earthquake once again highlights the seismic risks in Northeast India. However, the absence of major damage has provided relief to residents and officials alike.
