India strongly highlighted the importance of secure maritime routes during the BRICS foreign ministers’ meeting in New Delhi. The message gained significance as both Iran and the United Arab Emirates attended the high-level gathering amid rising tensions in West Asia.
External Affairs Minister S. Jaishankar stressed that safe and uninterrupted movement through international waterways remains critical for global economic stability. He specifically referred to the Strait of Hormuz and the Red Sea during his address.
The Strait of Hormuz handles a major share of the world’s oil shipments. Any disruption in the route directly affects energy-importing nations like India.
Iran-UAE Tensions Shadow BRICS Meeting
The BRICS discussions took place against the backdrop of sharp tensions between Iran and the UAE. Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi accused the UAE of supporting military operations against Tehran during the ongoing regional conflict.
Diplomatic sources said disagreements between the two countries made it difficult for BRICS members to reach consensus on West Asia. Reports suggested tensions surfaced openly during closed-door discussions in New Delhi.
India avoided directly taking sides during the discussions and instead focused on regional stability, maritime security, and uninterrupted trade flows. New Delhi currently holds the BRICS chairmanship for 2026.

Hormuz Remains Critical For India’s Energy Security

Iran recently announced tighter naval monitoring around the Strait and asked commercial ships to cooperate with Iranian naval forces. The statement came after reports of vessel seizures near the UAE coast.
Indian officials have repeatedly called for free and safe navigation through international waters. New Delhi has also increased maritime security efforts to protect Indian-linked vessels operating near the Gulf region.
BRICS Faces Challenge Of Internal Divisions
The expanded BRICS bloc now includes Iran and the UAE alongside India, China, Russia, Brazil, and South Africa. The wider grouping has increased the bloc’s global influence but also created new diplomatic divisions.
Iran urged BRICS nations to condemn the United States and Israel over the ongoing conflict. However, internal disagreements prevented the group from presenting a unified position on the crisis.
