The Ministry of Railways has cleared the introduction of a Hydrogen fuel cell DEMU train for the Jind-Sonipat route in Haryana, marking another step towards cleaner railway transportation in India.
Officials said the approval has been granted with multiple safety stipulations and operational guidelines to ensure secure functioning of the hydrogen-powered train service.
The project is part of Indian Railways’ broader plan to introduce green energy solutions and reduce carbon emissions across its network.
Safety Conditions Included In Approval
Railway authorities stated that the approval comes with strict safety requirements linked to hydrogen storage, fuel handling and operational monitoring.
Officials have asked concerned departments to ensure proper emergency response systems, staff training and regular inspection mechanisms before commercial operations begin.
The Railways is expected to closely monitor the project during the initial operational phase.

Focus On Green Railway Technology
The Hydrogen fuel cell DEMU project is being seen as an important move towards sustainable public transport in India.
Hydrogen-powered trains are considered environmentally friendly because they produce minimal emissions compared to conventional diesel-powered trains.
Railway experts believe the technology could help Indian Railways reduce fuel dependency and promote cleaner mobility solutions in the future.
Haryana Route Chosen For Pilot Operations
The Jind-Sonipat route has been selected as one of the key sections for introducing the hydrogen-powered train initiative.
Officials said infrastructure preparation and technical testing will continue before full-scale passenger operations begin.
The project is also expected to provide valuable operational data for future hydrogen train expansion plans across other railway zones.
