The Supreme Court on Monday asked the Calcutta High Court to urgently hear Trinamool Congress leader Abhishek Banerjee’s petition seeking permission to travel abroad. The top court said the matter should be taken up without unnecessary delay.
The Abhishek Banerjee foreign travel plea reached the Supreme Court after Banerjee requested an early hearing before the Calcutta High Court. The court did not decide the merits of the case.
Supreme Court Issues Direction
A Bench of the Supreme Court asked the Calcutta High Court to hear the matter at the earliest. The direction was limited to ensuring an expeditious hearing of the petition.
The Supreme Court did not express any opinion on whether permission should be granted. That decision will be taken by the High Court after hearing the parties.
Banerjee Seeks Permission to Travel
Abhishek Banerjee approached the courts seeking approval to travel overseas. The request is linked to legal proceedings in which conditions were imposed on his foreign visits.
His legal team argued that the matter required urgent consideration because of the proposed travel schedule. The High Court is expected to hear the plea soon.
High Court to Decide the Matter
The Calcutta High Court will now examine the petition and hear submissions from all parties. It will decide whether Banerjee can travel abroad under the applicable legal conditions.
The Abhishek Banerjee foreign travel plea will remain under judicial consideration until the High Court delivers its order.
