The Congress on Thursday ended days of speculation by naming V. D. Satheesan as Kerala’s next Chief Minister. The decision followed intense discussions within the party leadership after the United Democratic Front returned to power in the state.
Satheesan was chosen over senior Congress leader K. C. Venugopal, who was considered a strong contender for the post. Party leaders said the final decision reflected political calculations and organisational realities in Kerala.
Grassroots Support Favoured Satheesan
Congress insiders said Satheesan enjoyed stronger backing among local leaders and party workers. Alliance partners in the UDF also reportedly supported his candidature during internal discussions.
The Indian Union Muslim League was said to be among the allies backing Satheesan. The IUML remains one of the Congress-led alliance’s most influential partners in Kerala politics.
Several local protests also emerged against the possibility of Venugopal becoming Chief Minister. Posters opposing the move appeared in parts of the state during the leadership discussions.

Congress Weighed Political Risks
Party leaders believed Satheesan connected better with workers and voters across Kerala. He was also viewed as the face of the Congress campaign against the Left government.
The Congress leadership reportedly considered Venugopal’s national responsibilities before making the announcement. He currently serves as a Lok Sabha MP and holds an important organisational role in the party.
If Venugopal had become Chief Minister, he would likely have needed to resign from Parliament and later contest a by-election. Congress leaders reportedly wanted to avoid that political uncertainty.
For the party leadership, stability appeared to be a major factor behind the decision.
Why Satheesan Got The Edge
Satheesan has represented Paravur multiple times in the Kerala Assembly. He also served as the Leader of Opposition before the UDF’s election victory.
Political observers said his experience in Kerala politics strengthened his position during the leadership race. Congress leaders also believed he had deeper grassroots support within the state unit.
The Congress leadership stressed that senior leaders would continue working together after the announcement. The party now faces the challenge of balancing internal groups while forming the new government.

Congress Focuses On Unity
The appointment gives Satheesan the responsibility of managing governance and maintaining party unity. Senior leaders, including Venugopal, are expected to continue playing key organisational roles.
Political analysts believe the move also reflects the Congress strategy to strengthen its position in southern India. Kerala remains one of the few states where the party currently holds direct power.
Supporters described the decision as recognition of Satheesan’s role in the UDF comeback campaign. Congress leaders, meanwhile, insisted the party remained united after the announcement.
The focus will now shift to cabinet formation and alliance coordination in Kerala. Political attention will also remain on how smoothly the Congress handles internal factions under VD Satheesan Kerala CM leadership.
Party leaders said they expect a stable transition after days of speculation surrounding the leadership race. For now, VD Satheesan Kerala CM has become the Congress leadership’s final decision in Kerala.
