India made a winning start to the three-match ODI series with a six-wicket victory over England in the opening match at Edgbaston. Chasing 259, the visitors reached the target with 28 balls to spare to take a 1-0 lead in the series.

Shubman Gill led the chase with a fluent 80, while Axar Patel produced an outstanding all-round display. Washington Sundar also played a key role with an unbeaten half-century as India comfortably crossed the finish line.

England Recover After Middle-Order Collapse

England made a positive start after winning the toss, but their innings lost momentum following a dramatic collapse. The hosts slipped from 61 without loss to 80 for five as India’s bowlers struck at regular intervals.

Joe Root kept England in the contest with a composed 76 not out. Liam Dawson added 68, and the pair shared a valuable partnership before England were bowled out for 258 in 47.5 overs.

Gill Anchors India’s Chase

ENG vs IND 1st ODI saw India lose early wickets, but captain Shubman Gill remained calm at the crease. His well-paced 80 laid the foundation for the successful chase before he retired hurt because of cramps.

Gill found support from Axar Patel, who scored a quick 57. Their partnership shifted the momentum firmly in India’s favour.

Axar and Sundar Finish the Job

After Gill left the field, Axar Patel and Washington Sundar ensured there were no late setbacks. Sundar remained unbeaten on 52, while Axar completed an impressive all-round performance after earlier taking four wickets.

Axar was named Player of the Match for his match-winning contributions with both bat and ball. India eventually finished on 262 for four to secure a comfortable victory.

India Take Early Control of the Series

The win gives India a 1-0 lead in the three-match ODI series and plenty of confidence heading into the second match. England, meanwhile, will look to improve their batting after another disappointing middle-order collapse.

With Gill in excellent form and Axar delivering with both bat and ball, ENG vs IND 1st ODI ended with India making a strong statement in the series opener.
