India has summoned senior Iranian diplomats after an Indian sailor was killed during an Iranian strike on commercial shipping in the Strait of Hormuz. The Ministry of External Affairs (MEA) lodged a strong protest and sought an explanation over the incident.
The sailor was among the crew of a commercial vessel caught in the escalating conflict in West Asia. The incident has raised fresh concerns over the safety of Indian nationals working on ships in the region.
MEA Registers Strong Protest
The Indian government called in Iran’s Deputy Chief of Mission in New Delhi and conveyed its deep concern over the death of the Indian sailor. Officials urged Tehran to ensure the safety of civilian vessels and avoid attacks that endanger innocent lives.
New Delhi also stressed the importance of protecting international shipping routes, particularly in the Strait of Hormuz, one of the world’s busiest energy corridors.

Conflict Disrupts Commercial Shipping
The West Asia war has significantly increased risks for merchant ships passing through the Gulf region. Several commercial vessels have come under attack in recent weeks, forcing shipping companies to review their routes and security measures.
The Strait of Hormuz handles a large share of global crude oil exports. Any disruption in the waterway has the potential to affect international trade and energy markets.
India Closely Monitoring the Situation
The MEA said it remains in contact with Indian missions in the region and is monitoring the safety of Indian citizens. Authorities are also coordinating with shipping companies and international partners to ensure the security of Indian crew members.
India has repeatedly called for restraint and urged all sides to resolve differences through dialogue instead of military action.
Regional Tensions Continue to Rise
Military activity has intensified across West Asia as Iran and the United States exchange strikes. Governments across the region have stepped up security while international leaders continue diplomatic efforts to prevent a wider conflict.
As the West Asia war continues, India has reiterated that the safety of its citizens and uninterrupted maritime trade remain its top priorities.
